GRADES AND GRADE CALCULATIONS
Please remember that grades are a reflection of student success at a particular time on the required mathematics standards. Students and parents are advised to focus on math skills, rather than grades, since the math skills are paramount. Also, since success in math skills will result in high grades, a focus on the skills themselves has side benefits of reducing stress and maximizing learning while achieving the desired high grades.
Grades are calculated using three categories in all classes:
Many assignments will be worth a different number of points, and individual items within assignments may be worth a different number of points. Students will at times be expected to revisit/re-do poorly done work to correct misconceptions and/or errors; however, that is not a guaranteed option for most assignments and is rarely allowed for tests. The expectation is that students will do their absolute best at all times on all tasks. All practice work is not graded; however, practice is essential to success in mastering mathematics, so students are advised to treat every task as if it were graded. No work is assigned without valid purpose. Again, students are advised to focus on math skills rather than grades, since math mastery will necessarily produce good grades. |
* Note: "Extra credit" with the purpose of inflating a grade is NOT offered. Every effort is made to ensure that a student's grade is an accurate representation of the level of skill mastery. Periodically, tasks may be offered to all students for 'bonus' points which are added to either practice or assessment calculations based on the nature of the bonus task. *
** Algebra and Geometry are HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES and those grades will become part of the student's permanent high school transcript records. At the end of the year, students in these classes will take an End Of Course Exam. The score on this exam will be converted into a grade and will have a percentage impact on the student's final yearly average for the course. **
